Day four of the 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered plenty of excitement as Tunisia, Sweden, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Germany, Curaçao, Japan, and the Netherlands all took centre stage. The day's schedule featured four matches, including the tournament debuts of Curaçao and opening fixtures for two African nations.

Germany opened proceedings against World Cup newcomers Curaçao, while Japan and the Netherlands faced off in a highly anticipated clash in Dallas. Ivory Coast later battled Ecuador in Philadelphia before Sweden and Tunisia concluded the day's action.

#### Curaçao Create History Despite Heavy Defeat

Tournament debutants Curaçao etched their name into World Cup history despite suffering a 7-1 defeat to four-time champions Germany.

Germany struck first through Felix Nmecha after just seven minutes at Houston Stadium, appearing set for a routine victory. However, Curaçao produced a memorable moment in the 21st minute when Livano Comenencia scored the nation’s first-ever World Cup goal, sparking celebrations among their supporters.

The goal made Curaçao the first World Cup debutant since Nigeria in 1994 to score within the opening 21 minutes of their first tournament match.

Germany quickly regained control, though, with goals from Nico Schlotterbeck, Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown, and Denis Undav sealing an emphatic victory.

#### Japan and Netherlands Deliver a Thriller

One of the most eagerly awaited fixtures of the group stage lived up to the hype as Japan and the Netherlands played out an entertaining 2-2 draw.

After a scoreless first half, Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk broke the deadlock in the 51st minute with a well-taken header. Japan responded swiftly through Keito Nakamura, whose effort from outside the box restored parity.

The Dutch regained the lead moments later thanks to a superb finish from Crysencio Summerville, but Japan refused to surrender. Their persistence paid off in the closing stages when Daichi Kamada headed home in the 89th minute to secure a valuable point.

#### Ivory Coast Leave It Late Against Ecuador

African champions Ivory Coast made a winning start to their World Cup campaign, edging Ecuador 1-0 to strengthen their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

With Germany already expected to top the group after defeating Curaçao, both sides understood the significance of securing all three points. The contest was fiercely competitive from the outset, with Ecuador entering the match unbeaten in 22 games and Ivory Coast buoyed by a recent victory over France.

Despite Ecuador’s determined resistance, the Elephants found a breakthrough at the death, as Amad Diallo struck in the 90th minute to hand his side a crucial victory.

#### Sweden Overpower Tunisia

Tunisia endured another disappointing World Cup outing as Sweden cruised to a dominant 5-1 win in their Group F opener.

The Swedes took control early when Yasin Ayari opened the scoring after seven minutes. Alexander Isak soon doubled the advantage, finishing off an assist from Viktor Gyökeres.

Tunisia briefly reduced the deficit through Omar Rekik just before halftime, but any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished. Gyökeres added his name to the scoresheet before Mattias Svanberg and Ayari's second goal completed a comprehensive victory for Graham Potter’s side.

The result sends Sweden to the top of Group F, while Tunisia sit at the bottom ahead of challenging fixtures against Japan and the Netherlands.
