Osuofia Reflects on Unplanned Acting Career and Life Beyond the Spotlight
The acclaimed actor explained that his initial goal was to work behind the scenes as a scriptwriter. However, colleagues who admired his natural sense of humour repeatedly encouraged him to appear in front of the camera.

Speaking during a recent episode of the Selah Meditate podcast, Owoh recalled that his acting journey began in the 1980s when ATV offered him a seven-minute stand-up comedy segment. Although reluctant at first, he eventually gave in to the pressure from those around him. The positive response from viewers convinced him to continue performing, setting him on the path to becoming one of Nollywood’s most beloved actors.

Looking back on his decades-long career, the veteran entertainer admitted that fame has come with significant sacrifices. According to him, celebrity status has limited his ability to live freely and enjoy the privacy he once had.

He noted that while many people are attracted to the advantages of being famous, they often overlook the restrictions that come with public recognition. Owoh said stardom places limits on everyday activities and reduces personal freedom in ways many people do not anticipate.

The 71-year-old actor also weighed in on the growing practice of casting actors based on their social media influence rather than their acting abilities. He dismissed suggestions that online popularity could replace genuine talent, maintaining that true skill remains the foundation of a successful acting career.

Owoh stressed that social media fame may bring visibility, but it cannot take the place of authentic talent and professional competence.

His remarks come at a time when several Nigerian actors, including Shine Rosman, Bolaji Ogunmola, and Osereme Inegbenebor, have voiced concerns about casting decisions in Nollywood. The actors have accused some filmmakers of placing greater value on physical appearance, complexion, body shape, and social media following than on acting ability. Despite the growing debate, industry guilds have yet to issue an official response to the concerns.
