New York Giants long snapper Casey Kreiter is a somewhat forgotten figure. If he doesn’t make a mistake, he will usually be an afterthought to the media and fans in the stands.
Inside the building at 1925 Giants Drive, however, it’s a different story.
Special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey praised Kreiter when he met with reporters earlier this week, forcing him to sit out the action for an extended period of time.
“Casey is the glue. He’s the glue of our special forces. He’s the quarterback of our punt team,” McGaughey told reporters this week. “I couldn’t sit here and tell you how important he is to our special forces. He’s a great leader, insightful, like a coach on the field. think, are true leaders in our room, and bring our members together each week.
“He writes his own scouting report, writes it on the board, and they come in and look at it and talk about each unit as a whole. How important he is to us. I can’t begin to explain it, it’s a special teams group.”
Kreiter essentially serves as an additional assistant coach in addition to the players on the field. Eventually, another former Giant, Chase Blackburn, will be given a similar opportunity, which would put him in good position when it comes time to hang up his cleats.
Unfortunately for Kreiter, there’s not much to gloat about here in 2023. Through no fault of his own, the Giants’ special teams are among the worst in football.
