A drink called Karimocho (sometimes spelled Karimocho). If you’ve never tried red wine and cola, try it today. I love easy cocktail recipes, but this one is unique.
This refreshing cocktail recipe originated in Spain as a way to preserve wine that had begun to deteriorate. This is a great recipe to try when you’ve left an opened bottle out for too long. You can use any inexpensive red wine for this recipe, such as the bottle you just used for your dinner recipe.

material
- red wine – Choose an inexpensive red wine that pairs well with the food.
- coke – I used classic Coca-Cola soda. Many people trust Mexican Coke because it is made with cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.
- orange and mint – There are two types of optional garnishes to choose from. I also love lemon slices.
This simple cocktail is best served in a highball glass with ice and a straw.
direction
Fill a highball glass with ice.
Mix equal amounts of red wine and cola.
Optional garnishes include orange slices or mint leaves.
What does Karimocho taste like?
Before trying red wine and Coca-Cola, I was skeptical. Admittedly, I’ve enjoyed wine and rum many times (I love Cube Libre), so I don’t know why I was so nervous about this combination. Having tried it, I have to say that the flavors come together very well. It’s unique and refreshing. The sweetness of cola is added to the rich red wine and it is very delicious. It’s similar to sangria.
tips on how to make
- If you have bitters on hand, add a little bit of bitters to your drink.
- Usually I use leftover wine for this recipe, but if you buy a new bottle, your best option is Spanish red wine, also known as Rioja.
- Don’t knock it till you try it! This recipe is so delicious that it’s not yet common in America, but maybe it should be.
history
This drink originated in the Basque region of Spain in the 1920s. The story goes that festival organizers added cola to a case of spoiled red wine in order to make it enjoyable again. Necessity is the mother of invention! Since then, this drink has become a popular happy hour menu item across Europe.
