Manchester United legend Louis Saha has told his former club not to pursue a deal for Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann, as a quick fix for another player in particular trouble. I warned you.
During the summer transfer window, media outlets linked United with a move for the 32-year-old forward, claiming his €25 million release clause was a bargain signing that would help add depth to Erik ten Hag’s frontline.
Earlier this month, The People’s Person reported that United may be convinced of a move for the Frenchman, especially given his financial availability and recent return to form.
Griezmann had a disappointing spell at Barcelona, where he struggled, but given his return to form, a return to Atletico proved to be the right career choice.
So far this season, the forward has scored 8 goals He recorded one assist in 12 La Liga games.
However, United’s interest in Griezmann is not new, given that the club reportedly made contact with him after Ten Hag arrived in Manchester last summer.
Griezmann is said to have been pleased with the interest from United, but has opted to remain in Spain to turn his loan move to Atletico into a permanent deal.
This follows reports near the end of last year in which journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that United and Griezmann were in talks, but that a move was unlikely.
Retired striker Louis Saha felt it was important to make his feelings clear about the possibility of signing Griezmann, given that United are open to re-signing the player.
“He’s a smart player who can get in the pocket and create things and score goals.” saha saidHe added that his scoring ability would add to the excitement about a potential transfer.
Saha also warned that Griezmann was a “short-term solution”, adding that he could not understand why United would consider signing such a player.
Notably, Saha sees Griezmann as a replacement for newly signed Mason Mount, who struggled to make an impact during his injury-plagued debut season at Old Trafford.
“They already have Mason Mount, but Griezmann is the type of player Manchester United need, so that means they are looking for a replacement for him,” Saha explained.
Already 32 years old, a move for Griezmann could rival those of Raphael Varane or Casemiro.
Both were impressive players for United on the day, but it became clear that neither have long futures at Old Trafford, and Saha expects the same outcome if Griezmann is pursued.
