This decision comes in response to the growing number of road accidents linked to unsafe vehicles, many of which are imported after being damaged or poorly repaired. Authorities say the move is necessary to reduce fatalities, protect consumers from fraud, and improve overall vehicle qualit

The Federal Government has announced an immediate ban on the importation of accident-damaged vehicles into Nigeria, sending a clear message to both car dealers and buyers.

Under the new policy, every vehicle—new or used—must pass a roadworthiness certification before being allowed into the country. Any car that fails to meet these standards risks being denied entry, seized, or penalized.

An accidented vehicle refers to any car that has been involved in a crash or suffered significant impact affecting its structure, body, or internal systems. While some of these cars are repaired and resold—especially in markets where used “Tokunbo” vehicles are common—many repairs are substandard or conceal deeper issues. In severe cases, some cars classified as total losses abroad still end up being exported to countries with less strict regulations.

For buyers, it’s important to know how to identify a damaged vehicle before making a purchase. One key step is checking the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), a unique 17-character code that reveals a car’s history, including past accidents, ownership, and whether it was written off. Refusal by a seller to provide the VIN is a major warning sign.

Physical inspection is also crucial. Signs like uneven paint, misaligned panels, or visible welding may indicate previous damage. The chassis, which forms the car’s structural base, should be carefully examined, as any bending or repair could affect safety. Under the hood, mismatched or newly replaced parts in unusual areas may point to hidden repairs.

A test drive can also reveal problems, such as unusual vibrations, strange noises, or the car pulling to one side. In addition, involving a trusted mechanic for a professional inspection can help uncover issues that might not be obvious at first glance.

There are also clear red flags to watch out for, including prices that seem unrealistically low, sellers who rush the sale, missing documentation, or inconsistent information about the car’s history.

Not all accidented cars are necessarily unsafe—vehicles with minor damage can be properly repaired and remain roadworthy. However, cars with structural damage or poor repairs pose serious risks.

Overall, the government’s crackdown on accident-damaged vehicle imports is aimed at improving road safety and protecting lives, even though it may lead to higher car prices in the short term.
