Supporters of VfB Stuttgart in the German Bundesliga were not happy when the club debuted their new kit on the pitch at the weekend.
Stuttgart wore the new black and white special edition jersey for the first time during their home match against Werder Bremen on Saturday, December 2nd. This is a big departure from the usual white home kit with a red band on the chest.
Supporter group Kommando Cannstadt was not too happy about the move and held up a banner that read: “Was the hat DIESE HÄSSLICHE UND TEURE SCHEISSE MIT EINEM VfB-TRIKOT ZU TUN?” (“What does this ugly, expensive shit have to do with VfB jerseys?”)
The jersey in question was unveiled by the club in late November and was designed in collaboration with Esslingen’s renowned artist Tim Wenger. “The black and white pattern corresponds to a cross-section of the head of fielderkraut, a superfood grown in our region and used repeatedly in Wenger’s work.” The VfB website says:.
“For the first time, there is no longer just one version of the jersey. If you look closely, you can see that the pattern is not the same in every specimen. Instead, there are variations of the jersey in the design, taken from different parts of the larger image. There are five of them. Football and art are combined in a unique way.”
There is a black band on the front with “STUTTGART” written in white on the inside and “ART” written in bold letters. The VfB emblem and the manufacturer Jako logo are gold. The raglan sleeves are solid black and feature Jako’s trademark circles on the shoulders.
Part of the dissatisfaction with the Kommando Konstadt jerseys is what they sell. The shirt was limited to his 1,893 pieces (after the year of VfB’s founding) and was sold at the amazing price of 189.30 euros. This was more than double his list price. 2023-24 Home & Away Kit (€84.99).
However, supporters could not complain about the final score as VfB defeated Werder Bremen 2-0. And on Wednesday 6 December, they returned to their usual white home kit as they defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the Round of 16 of the DFB Pokal.
