It’s time for the AAR team to look back at some of our favorite books from the past year. We begin our annual roundup with Kane’s picks for his best books of 2023.
I love books with humor, so it’s no wonder that most of my favorite books this year are romantic comedies. Below are my top 10 picks for 2023. In no particular order.
love bet Written by Lynn Painter
I really enjoyed this book. It’s a great rom-com with lots of witty banter. Jack and Harry meet at a wedding and have a one-night stand. Afterwards, they decide to become just friends and help each other find their soulmates. It was really funny to watch them date other people and it was so special when they laughed and fell in love with each other. We highly recommend this feel-good romance.

burnout syndrome Written by Sophie Kinsella
This made me laugh out loud, tears welling up in my eyes. The best Sophie Kinsella. Sasha works at a travel app and she is feeling burnt out. Finn is an overworked management consultant who has been feeling unwell at work. The two meet at a hotel where they often stayed when they were young. A heartwarming story, this is a must-read for anyone who has experienced burnout or is looking for a fun romantic comedy.

Checkmate Written by Ali Hazlewood
This book is Hazelwood’s first YA novel, and it’s amazing! Ms. Mallory hadn’t played chess in years until her best friend asked her to participate in a charity chess tournament. Mal ends up defeating Nolan, the world’s top chess player and bad boy! Mal is very mean and Nolan is kind. This story has a great plot, sweet romance, family drama, and fun, nerdy characters. Highly recommended!

This story is filled with everything I love: road trips, witty banter, psychic events, and sweet romance. Noel has hit rock bottom, been fired from his job, and is living with his parents and grieving the death of his grandmother (Gram). She discovers an old photo of Grams with a man named Paul, and she is surprised to learn that Paul’s grandson is her old enemy from high school, Theo. They all decide to go on a road trip that her girlfriend Grams and Paul were planning. As Noel and Theo fall in love, I love watching them explore amazing landscapes as they hike trails, boat through canyons, and take scenic jeep tours. did.

Love comedy Written by Curtis Sittenfeld
This book was interesting and new. Sally is a writer for Night Owls (TNO), a fictional version of Saturday Night Live (SNL). A behind-the-scenes look at how cast members put together a show packed with comedy sketches. I laughed along with Sally, Noah, the guest hosts, and the TNO cast as they worked together on the sketch. I loved how Sally and Noah opened up and took a chance on love. This book is a feel-good story and I recommend it, especially if you’re a fan of SNL.

happy place Written by Emily Henry
happy place Full of heart and humor. When Harriet meets up with her college friends, she is surprised to find her ex-fiance Winn there. The story begins when Harriet and Winn first meet and fall in love, all the way to the present day. This story is about friendship, family, and love, and I think this is the author’s best book to date. Harriet and Winn are soulmates, and their friends are so funny and adorable that I found myself rooting for them all. Although there is humor throughout the book, this is not a light romantic comedy. It deals with themes of sadness, melancholy, and self-growth, as well as an uneasy second romance. The ending is very satisfying.

good point Written by Sophie Cousens
This is a time leap story and I loved it. Lucy, 26, is having a really bad day, but she’s got a good job, a loved one, and a decent place to live and is ready to “skip to the good parts.” This story is heartbreaking and wonderful by her and is now my new favorite Sophie Cousens book. She laughed and cried as she cheered Lucy on. This is a great story and I recommend it to readers looking for a feel-good story with depth and romance.
