Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo Olu, and Ivorian football icon Didier Drogba have both commended Nigerian football stars for their accomplishments in the recent CAF awards.
Sanwo Olu lauded the Nigerian athletes for their historic achievements in both the male and female categories of the awards. Victor Osimhen, the Super Eagles and Napoli striker, clinched the title of the best player in the male category, while Asisat Oshoala, who plays for Barcelona, secured the Female African Player of the Year award, marking her fifth win – a record-breaking feat.
The Governor expressed his elation on his social media platform, stating, “As a football enthusiast and Nigerian, I am thrilled to celebrate the incredible successes of our superstars at the #CAFAwards2023. Heartiest congratulations to @victorosimhen9, whose attainment of the 2023 African Men’s Player of the Year after 24 years has elevated Nigeria back to the pinnacle of male individual awards. Witnessing his rise fills me with immense pride. It’s a monumental achievement for Nigerian football.”
“Furthermore, it’s an extraordinary achievement for our Agba Baller @AsisatOshoala, securing her sixth win and an unprecedented fifth consecutive time as the 2023 Women’s Player of the Year. A well-deserved accolade.”
“Congratulations also to @Nadoziechiamaka, named Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year, and to the Super Falcons for earning the title of 2023 National Team of the Year (Women). These victories underscore our nation’s exceptional football prowess, and we remain steadfast in our support for them.”
Ivory Coast football legend, Didier Drogba, who himself has previously claimed the award, extended congratulations to the players by posting on his official social media handles in a celebratory manner. He wrote, “Long live the new King and Queen of Africa @victorosimhen9 @asisat_oshoala @caf_online. Congratulations, my Nigerian People. We are waiting for you in January @afcon_2023.” Drogba’s message conveyed felicitations to Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala for their achievements and expressed anticipation for their presence at the AFCON 2023 in January.
Super Falcons’ goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nadozie, expressed her gratitude and appreciation to her fans and fellow Nigerians via her social media post. She wrote, “I am honored and grateful to have won the AFRICAN FEMALE BEST GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR. This is a dream come true for my family and me. I want to use this platform to appreciate my coaches and teammates for the encouragement and support, and a special thanks to my Naija people.” Her message conveyed heartfelt thanks to her supporters, acknowledging the pivotal role played by her family, coaches, teammates, and the Nigerian populace in her achievement, illustrating her deep appreciation for their unwavering support.
Throughout the year, the Nigerian Football Federation experienced contrasting levels of success between its male and female categories. Notably, the female side achieved significant successes, displaying remarkable accomplishments. However, the male counterpart encountered challenges and struggles across various aspects, albeit the individual players performed exceptionally well.
In the female category, Nigerian football saw notable achievements and triumphs, showcasing commendable success in competitions or events. On the contrary, the male side faced difficulties and setbacks, possibly across various fronts such as performance in tournaments, organizational issues, or other challenges. Despite these collective challenges faced by the male team, the individual players excelled in their respective capacities, displaying impressive skill and talent.
While the male team grappled with obstacles as a collective unit, the players’ individual achievements stood out, reflecting their dedication and prowess within their personal performances. This dynamic led to a disparity between the collective performance of the male team and the outstanding individual achievements of its players.
